Herts 100 camp

15 July 2009

herts100Last weekend I went on what is probably the biggest camp I have ever been on – certainly the biggest since I became a Leader – with more than 2,000 campers! Herts 100 was to celebrate the centenary of Scouting in Hertfordshire. And great fun it was too!

We took 42 young people with us for the weekend – 20 Scouts and 22 Cubs – plus another 16 Beavers who visited for the Saturday. I believe we were the third largest group in the entire camp!

There was certainly no shortage of activities for the young people to do over the weekend! There was more than 100 available to do (spread across all sections) and more than enough to keep everyone entertained! My district was running the cooking bases just off the activity field, and I spent my Saturday morning cooking bananas and chocolate – the hardest bit being keep the constant turnover of hot embers going!

Saturday late afternoon, we had a carnival – my group all dressed up as clowns, face paint and all! All the leaders had full-on costumes… which we couldn’t actually sit down in because they would split (one managed to split the trousers just putting them on)! But after the carnival had finished, it began to rain. Which continued until Sunday morning. But, as we’re Scouts, everything continued as planned!

Luckily, after the rain came the sun, glorious sunshine! So all the tents dried nicely, and were packed away. And then picked up the following evening.

This is my first day in the last 12 where I have not been doing any Scouting! It’s nice to have a day off. But only until Friday, when we have our last Scout meeting before the summer break – followed the next day by Lees Wood Fun Day. And then some time clearing out our cupboards!

Does it ever end? No. And would I want it to? Same answer.
